Bormioli Rocco Bartender

Bormioli Rocco’s Bartender collection draws on the image of the classic American bar: weighty-looking glass with a ribbed, almost cut-glass relief that catches the light as soon as it holds something. It is a series that belongs on a wooden bar counter.

In the Netherlands, the collection mainly consists of beer glasses. There are three beer glasses, holding 28, 40.5, and 52 cl, and one 55 cl mule mug, all sold in sets of six. So here, you are not choosing between shapes but between serving sizes.

Which size suits which glass

Start with what you are pouring. The 28 cl glass is the size for a small beer or for a strong craft beer that you deliberately pour short. The 40.5 cl is the standard size for a 25 or 30 cl lager, with enough room above the beer to leave a head. The 52 cl takes half a litre without the foam running over the rim.

The 55 cl mule mug sits outside that line-up. It is meant for long drinks with plenty of ice, where the volume is largely taken up by the ice itself. For drinks with friends, count on at least two glasses per guest, because a half-empty glass gets abandoned more often than you would think.

Pouring and serving

Pour beer into a clean, cool and wet glass. Hold the glass at an angle at first and let the beer run down the wall, then straighten it for the last third so the head forms. The 52 cl glass gives you the room for that.

Fill the mule mug completely with ice first and only then with the drink; ice on top of a half-full glass melts faster and thins the drink too quickly. That goes for every long drink you pour into it, from ginger beer to cola.

Tempered glass and the dishwasher

Bormioli Rocco makes this series from tempered glass, which means the glass has had a heat treatment that makes it more resistant to knocks and to swings in temperature. That is exactly what you need in a busy bar.

Dishwasher safe, but avoid extremes: filling a glass straight out of the machine with ice while it is still hot remains a risk. Let glasses cool and steam off on a rack.
