The story
Passoã launched in France in 1985. That was also when peach schnapps became popular, as the eighties were all about fruit liqueurs. It contains passion fruit juice from Brazil. Its orange-red color made the bottle instantly recognizable behind the bar. In the Netherlands, the liqueur got a second life when the Pornstar Martini became the country's most popular cocktail. The flavor that takes center stage in it is precisely this one. If you don't feel like using the shaker, just pour Passoã with juice.
The right glass
Choose a 33 to 47 cl long drink glass. The proportions are mild, and a large glass full of ice makes it fresher, not weaker. Choose clear, colorless glass. You want that deep orange Passoã with juice on display, and the pulp slowly settling to the bottom completes the look. If you make the version with prosecco, use a tulip glass or a coupe.

The right tools
For a Passoã cocktail, in addition to a glass, use a long bar spoon, a jigger for precise measuring, a citrus juicer, and long ice sticks. These are the bar tools we use ourselves; you can find them all in our bar tools & cocktail sets.

What do you need to make a Passoã cocktail?
For a Passoã cocktail, you need the right base. Well-known bottles include Passoã. Each drink page tells you the alcohol percentage, what it tastes like, which cocktails it works in, and which glass you need.
Variations & twists
Passoa with prosecco is just about the easiest party cocktail there is. Add 4 cl of liqueurto the glass and top up with bubbles. Done. Cranberry juice makes it deep red, while pineapple juice gives it a tropical flavor. Add vodka and lime and you've got almost a Pornstar Martini. Also try Passoa with tonic and a slice of lime. It's surprisingly dry. Find more ideas in all cocktail recipes.
Serving tip
That splash of lime juice is there for a reason. Passoa is very sweet, and without acidity your drink can quickly become syrupy. Place half a fresh passion fruit on top. It costs almost nothing and turns a drink into a real cocktail. Serve it with a straw so you can get the pulp at the bottom too.
Frequently asked questions
What glass do you use for a Passoa cocktail?
A 33 to 47 cl long drink glass. See our long drink glasses.
What can you mix Passoa with?
Orange juice is the classic choice. Prosecco, cranberry juice, and tonic also go well with it. Not cola, though - the passion fruit clashes with the caramel.
How much alcohol is in Passoa?
Passoa has an alcohol content of 17 percent. With the proportions above, you'll have a long drink of about 5 percent, roughly the same as beer.
Can you make a Passoa cocktail non-alcoholic?
Yes. Use passion fruit juice or passion fruit syrup instead of the liqueur, top up with orange juice, and add a splash of lime. The flavor and color stay almost the same.
