Cosmopolitan

Timeless
classic

Pink, chic and surprisingly well-balanced: the Cosmopolitan conquered the world in the 1990s and has made a full comeback thanks to the revival of martini culture. Behind its glamorous image lies a serious cocktail – fresh with lime and cranberry, with the gentle kick of lemon vodka.

The story

The modern Cosmopolitan was refined in the late 1980s by bartenders in Miami and New York, with Toby Cecchini of The Odeon the best-known name: he was the first to use lemon vodka, Cointreau, fresh lime juice and a splash of cranberry. When Carrie Bradshaw and her friends routinely ordered one in Sex and the City, the “Cosmo” became the cocktail of a generation. After years of ironic jokes, it has been restored to its former glory: made well, the Cosmopolitan is simply an excellent, citrus-fresh martini variation.

The right glass

The Cosmopolitan belongs in a stemmed glass, allowing its distinctive pink color to shine. Traditionally, that means a V-shaped martini glass; modern bars often choose a compact coupe, which makes for more elegant sipping. Choose a size between 19 and 22 cl – large enough for the full recipe, small enough to stay cold. In our cosmopolitan glasses category, you’ll find both styles together. If you want to serve it in a classic V-shaped glass, take a look at our martini glasses.

Variations & twists

With white cranberry, it becomes a White Cosmo; with pomegranate juice, a Pomegranate Cosmo. The “flame of love” serve—a flamed orange zest—turns it into a piece of bar theatrics. Want it drier? Use less cranberry; the cocktail should be refreshing, not sweet. Looking for more inspiration? Browse all 80 cocktail recipes.

Serving tip

Flame the orange zest briefly over the glass: the caramelized citrus aroma elevates the Cosmo to bar-level quality. Use cranberry juice with character, not sugar water—the cocktail should be dry, not sweet.

The ratio and why lemon vodka

The build is 4 cl lemon vodka, 1.5 cl Cointreau, 1.5 cl fresh lime juice, and 3 cl cranberry juice, roughly 8 to 3 to 3 to 6. That ratio keeps it crisp: the citrus leads, while the cranberry mainly provides color and a touch of acidity. Lemon vodka is not a marketing gimmick but the core of the modern version, because the lemon oil complements the lime without adding extra acidity. If you only have regular vodka, add a squeezed lemon zest to the shaker and keep the rest the same.

Sweet or dry: how to adjust it

Many cosmos taste sweet, and that is rarely because of the recipe. Supermarket cranberry juice is often a juice drink with lots of added sugar; choose one with a high percentage of cranberry and a noticeably tart flavor. If it still tastes too rounded, reduce the cranberry juice from 3 to 2 cl and add half a centiliter of extra lime juice. Conversely, if the lime is very sharp, add a bar spoon of simple syrup. Always taste before straining: the adjustment takes ten seconds and can save the entire cocktail.

Cosmopolitan, Kamikaze, or Sea Breeze

All three use vodka, but they otherwise have little in common. The Kamikaze is the closest relative: equal parts vodka, triple sec, and lime juice, without cranberry, making it stronger and drier. The Sea Breeze is a long drink with vodka, cranberry juice, and grapefruit juice over ice, so it is much longer and lighter. The Cosmopolitan sits exactly between the two: it shares its citrus base with the Kamikaze and its cranberry with the Sea Breeze, but it is served straight up in a chilled glass. Think of it as a citrus martini with color.

Alcohol-free Cosmopolitan

Without alcohol, this cocktail relies entirely on acidity and aroma. Use 4 cl alcohol-free gin or a neutral 0.0 base, 1.5 cl fresh lime juice, 3 cl cranberry juice, and 1 cl sugar syrup instead of Cointreau. Add a wide strip of lemon zest to the shaker and shake hard with plenty of ice for twelve seconds. What is missing here is the body provided by alcohol, so strain into a well-chilled glass and squeeze the orange zest generously over the surface. That aroma does more than half the work.

Frequently asked questions

What is in a Cosmopolitan cocktail?

A Cosmopolitan consists of 4 cl lemon vodka, 1.5 cl triple sec such as Cointreau, 1.5 cl fresh lime juice, and 3 cl cranberry juice, finished with a squeezed orange zest. The cranberry mainly provides color; the flavor balance comes from the combination of lemon vodka and fresh lime juice.

How do I make a Cosmopolitan?

Add all the ingredients to a shaker with plenty of ice and shake vigorously for twelve seconds, until the outside becomes frosted. Double-strain into a chilled martini glass or coupe and squeeze an orange zest over it. From bottle to glass, it takes less than two minutes.

Is a Cosmopolitan sweet?

No, when made well, it is fresh and on the dry side. The sweetness comes only from the triple sec; the rest is lime juice and a modest amount of cranberry. Use a flavorful cranberry juice instead of sweetened juice, and reduce it to 2 cl for an even drier cocktail.

Which glass do you use for a Cosmopolitan?

A stemmed glass with a capacity of 19 to 22 cl: traditionally, the V-shaped martini glass, while modern bars more often use a compact coupe. The stem keeps the cocktail cold and shows off its pink color to the fullest: see our cosmopolitan glasses.
