Eclat Ornements

With a tumbler it comes down to the ratio between height and diameter, and Ornements deliberately sits on the low side. Nine centimetres tall with a capacity of 32 cl means a wide glass that stands firmly and that you hold with your whole hand rather than with your fingertips. That is pleasant with a drink you take your time over. There is only one size, so the choice is really about quantity: one set of four for a small gathering, two sets if you want to pour both water and spirits from the same model. The cut pattern also gives grip, which makes a difference on a glass with condensation on the outside.

For whisky or rum, fill the tumbler to about four centimetres, with one large block of ice that melts more slowly than loose cubes. For a stirred cocktail on the rocks exactly the same principle applies. An Old Fashioned with bourbon, bitters and a twist of orange is the classic resident of this glass, and a Negroni with equal parts gin, Campari and red vermouth sits in it just as well.

Eclat works with crystalline glass, which is clearer than ordinary soda-lime glass but contains no lead and can therefore simply go in the dishwasher. Place the glasses separately in the rack so the cut edges do not knock against other crockery, because it is exactly on those points that chips appear. Drying with a linen cloth is more than cosmetic here: limescale lodges in the cut grooves and dulls the shine.
