With a tumbler it all comes down to capacity and to the ratio between height and diameter. 31 cl is the middle size: roomy enough for a longdrink with ice, small enough to stand beside a wine glass as a water glass without dominating the table. If you want something taller and narrower for a gin and tonic or a mojito, have a look at the longdrink glasses; if you are after something low and wide for whisky neat, you are better off with the whisky glasses. Two colours also means you can combine them, white for water and grey for soft drinks for instance, so nobody at the table loses track of their glass.

Never fill a tumbler to the brim. Leave about two centimetres, so you can pick the glass up without spilling and the ice has room to move. For an old fashioned you stir the drink cold in a mixing glass first and then pour it over a large block of ice in the tumbler; a large block melts more slowly than a handful of small cubes. A negroni goes the same way: stir, do not shake, and finish with a broad strip of orange peel.

The glasses can go in the dishwasher on a normal programme. Place them upright and make sure they do not touch each other, because most damage comes from glass against glass and not from the water itself. Dry them with a linen cloth while the glass is still lukewarm and no limescale haze will be left. Store them standing up rather than on their rim.
