What is the difference between a Boston and a cobbler shaker?
A Boston is two tins, or a tin with a glass, and needs a separate strainer. It chills faster and is easier to clean. A cobbler has three parts with a built-in strainer and cap, handy for home use.
When do you shake and when do you stir?
If there is juice, egg, cream or syrup in it, shake for about twelve seconds. If the cocktail is completely clear, such as a dry martini or negroni, stir for thirty to forty seconds so the drink stays heavy and smooth.
Which jigger size should I have?
The European standard is 2 and 4 cl. American jiggers measure 3 and 4.5 cl and belong with recipes that count in ounces. Check the graduations inside before following a recipe book to the letter.
How much ice goes in a shaker?
Fill the shaker or mixing glass generously, well over halfway. A large mass of ice melts more slowly than a few loose cubes and therefore dilutes your drink less. Always strain onto fresh ice afterwards.
Can shakers and jiggers go in the dishwasher?
Plain stainless steel can go in the machine. Coated versions in black, copper and gold should be washed by hand and dried straight away, otherwise the thin layer dulls or comes away sooner.
