Sonnema 1860 Berenburg
Sonnema's premium Berenburg: fresh herbs in every batch, a much higher herb dosage and 35% instead of 30%. Not a mixer for cola, but a bitter liqueur to drink neat and at room temperature, from a beautiful tumbler.

More herbs, fresh herbs
Sonnema 1860 was made to commemorate Sonnema's 160th anniversary, which began in 1860 with Berenburg. The difference from the regular bottle lies in the herbs. Fresh herbs are used for every production batch, and the herb dosage is considerably higher. The blend includes bitter orange, gentian root and basil, among others.
Those extra herbs make it fuller and richer, and at 35% alcohol it is also stronger than regular Sonnema at 30%. That is why 1860 is not intended for mixing with cola, but for drinking neat: at room temperature, in a beautiful tumbler, optionally with a few ice cubes.

A distinctly spicy nose, with the bitter orange of bitter orange peel and a green note of basil.
Rich and full

Long and bitter
A long, warming finish in which the gentian root and herbs linger.

How to drink Sonnema 1860
1860 is a bitter liqueur to be savored slowly. You taste the herbs best at room temperature.
Neat in a tumbler
Pour 40 ml at room temperature into a beautiful tumbler. Let it sit for a moment and drink in small sips. This is how Sonnema recommends enjoying 1860.
Tumblers →With a few ice cubes
Prefer it chilled? Add two or three ice cubes to 40 ml 1860 in a tumbler. The meltwater softens the bitters and opens up the herbs.
Whiskey glasses →Berenburg Old Fashioned
Briefly stir 50 ml Sonnema 1860, 5 ml sugar syrup and a twist of orange over a large ice cube. The orange complements the bitter orange in the bitters.
To the recipe →Stirred and bittersweet with 1860
The extra herbs in 1860 make it suitable for classics that normally call for whiskey. Keep it simple, so the bitters stay center stage.

Berenburg Old Fashioned
Sonnema 1860 instead of whiskey, with a little sugar and orange. Spicy and warming.
Berenburg Sour
Replace the whisky with 1860 and shake with lemon juice, sugar syrup, and egg white. Bitter, sour, and smooth.
Kopstoot
A drink alongside a small glass of beer. With 1860, a luxurious version of the Frisian tradition.
Warm Berenburg
Hot water, honey, lemon, and a splash of 1860. The herbs release even more of their flavor in the heat.More Sonnema Berenburg flavors
