Peachtree cocktail

A splash of peach schnapps, a glass full of ice, and cold OJ. That’s all you need for the easiest peach liqueur cocktail we know. The Peachtree has been a fixture at Dutch birthday parties for around forty years. Low in alcohol, full of fruit, and poured all at once. Prefer bubbles? Then make it a Peachtree fizz with prosecco or sparkling water.

The story

De Kuyper from Schiedam launched Peachtree in 1984. The name comes from Peachtree Street in Atlanta. Few liqueurs have ever flown off the shelves so quickly. Two years later, the bottle was in almost every bar in America, and the wave of peach schnapps that followed also gave rise to the Sex on the Beach and the Fuzzy Navel. Things were different here in the Netherlands. We mostly made it into a drink with orange juice. Sweet, light and so familiar that you can serve it to anyone.

The right glass

A Peachtree is a long drink. So it belongs in a tall glass of 33 to 47 cl. For this cocktail, we prefer the larger size. The proportions are mild, and with plenty of ice in a generous glass, it stays fresh rather than watery. Choose a clear Peachtree glass with no tint, so you can see that soft orange color. If you often serve guests, stackable Peachtree glasses are handy in the cupboard.

Variations & twists

Almost everyone knows the Fizzy Peachtree. Swap the orange juice for sparkling water or 7UP and squeeze in half a lime. It’s fresher and much less sweet. Cranberry juice gives it a pink hue. Peachtree with prosecco tastes like a peach spritz and comes close to a Bellini. Add vodka and you’ll get something close to a Sex on the Beach. Find even more ideas in all cocktail recipes.

Serving tip

Peach schnapps is very sweet. So let the ice do the work and fill the glass to the top. A few drops of fresh lemon juice take the edge off the sweetness. That little bit of acidity turns a kids’ drink into a cocktail. If you’re serving a group, mix it ahead of time in a pitcher and serve the ice on the side.

Good to know

What do you mix Peachtree with?

Orange juice is the classic, but Peachtree cocktails also work with cranberry juice, apple juice, or sparkling water. Stick to 5 cl of peach schnapps and top up to about 12 cl. Peachtree with orange soda works too, though it’s sweeter than fresh orange juice. De Kuyper’s bottle name is written as one word, though you’ll just as often see “peach tree cocktail.” Almost every mix needs something sour, because the liqueur is already sweet enough. Half a lime or a splash of lemon juice balances the drink, even if you use a different juice.

How to make a Fizzy Peachtree

For the Fizzy Peachtree, prepare the glass just as described above. Just leave out the juice. Fill the highball glass with ice, pour 5 cl of peach schnapps over it, and top up with about 12 cl of sparkling water or lemon soda. Squeeze half a lime over it. Without that acidity, you have nothing to balance the sweet liqueur. With plain sparkling water, the peach flavor comes through most sharply. With 7UP, it becomes rounder and sweeter. Pour the bubbles down the inside of the glass and stir just once to keep the fizz in.

Frequently asked questions

Which glass should you use for a Peachtree cocktail?

A tall long drink glass with a capacity of 33 to 47 cl. Find hospitality-quality sets in our highball glasses .

What is a Fizzy Peachtree?

It's the same peach schnapps, but you top it up with sparkling water or lemon soda instead of orange juice. You get a fresher, less sweet cocktail with fewer calories.

How much alcohol is in a Peachtree cocktail?

Peach schnapps usually contains between 15 and 20 percent alcohol. With the proportions above, you'll get a long drink that's about 5 percent alcohol. That's as strong as a glass of beer.

Can you make a Peachtree cocktail alcohol-free?

Yes. Use peach syrup or peach tea instead of the liqueur, and top it up with orange juice and sparkling water. The taste and color stay almost the same.
