What is Patrón Añejo?

Three types of oak, one year of patience

Añejo means old, and for tequila that means at least a year in wood. Patrón Añejo is handcrafted from 100% blue agave, distilled in small batches in copper pot stills at Hacienda Patrón in Jalisco, then aged for at least a year in a combination of French and Hungarian oak and used American whiskey barrels. Each batch is blended from these three types of barrels.

That mix of woods sets it apart from the Reposado, which rests for just two months. American oak adds vanilla and sweetness, while European oak brings more structure and spice. The tequila turns amber and smooth, with an oaky flavor and notes of vanilla, raisin, and honey. The agave is still there, but now it plays a supporting role alongside the wood rather than taking the lead.

How to drink it

How to taste aged tequila

Treat Añejo like whiskey or cognac: a good glass, room temperature, and take your time.

Neat, as a digestif

Pour 3 to 4 cl into a tulip-shaped glass or small cognac snifter. Let it rest for a few minutes, smell first, then taste in small sips. Best enjoyed after dinner.

With a drop of water

After the first sips, add a few drops of cold water to the glass. This opens up the nose: the honey and raisin come through more strongly, and the oak becomes softer.

Tequila Manhattan

50 ml Patrón Añejo, 25 ml sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes of Angostura, stir over ice and strain into a chilled coupe. The Añejo’s oak takes the place of rye whiskey.
