What is GlenDronach?

The sherry specialist from the Highlands

GlenDronach is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Highlands. The distillery was founded in 1826 by James Allardice and stands in a sheltered valley near the village of Forgue, in Aberdeenshire in eastern Scotland. The name is often translated as 'valley of the brambles'.

GlenDronach is known for its maturation in sherry casks. Most of the whisky is matured in casks that previously held Pedro Ximénez or oloroso sherry. This gives the whisky its dark color and rich flavor, with dried fruit, raisins, chocolate and spices. The whisky is not peated. Since 2016, GlenDronach has been part of Brown-Forman, along with sister distillery Benriach. The master blender is Dr. Rachel Barrie.

How to drink it

Three ways to drink GlenDronach

GlenDronach is a whisky to drink slowly neat, preferably after dinner. A drop of water helps with the stronger bottles.

Neat

Pour 30 ml into a tulip-shaped tasting glass and let it sit for a few minutes. This brings out the dried fruit and chocolate best.

Glass: tasting glass →

With a drop of water

With Ode to the Dark or the 28 Years at over 50% ABV, a few drops of water soften the alcohol and open up the sherry notes.

Glass: tasting glass →

Old Fashioned

Stir 50 ml GlenDronach 12 Years with a teaspoon of sugar syrup and two dashes of bitters over ice, with orange peel. Rich and Christmassy.

What percentage of alcohol is in GlenDronach?
The 12 Years Original is 43% ABV. The 15 Years Revival and Port Wood are 46%. Limited bottlings are higher: Ode to the Valley 46.2%, Ode to the Dark 50.8%, and the 28 Years PX Cask 51.5%.
How do you pronounce GlenDronach?
Approximately 'glen-DRON-ach', with the emphasis on the second syllable and the ch pronounced as in the Dutch word 'lach'.
Why is GlenDronach so dark?
The whisky is matured mainly in casks that previously held Pedro Ximénez or oloroso sherry. The wood and sherry remnants give the whisky a dark color and flavors of dried fruit and chocolate.
Is GlenDronach a smoky whisky?
No. The standard GlenDronach bottles are not peated. The depth comes from the sherry casks, not smoke. If you are looking for smoke with sherry, try the Smoky range from sister distillery Benriach.
What is the difference between GlenDronach 12 and 15?
Both are matured in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso casks. The 15 Years Revival is aged for three years longer, bottled at 46% instead of 43%, and is fuller, darker, and more complex. The 12 is softer and more approachable.
Which glass should you use for GlenDronach?
A tulip-shaped tasting glass, such as a Glencairn-style glass or a snifter. The narrow opening keeps the aromas of sherry and dried fruit together.
