Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial

The house’s pink bottle, and the only one in which some of the Pinot Noir is added to the blend as red wine. This brings notes of wild strawberry, raspberry and cherry, while the bottle remains a dry brut.

What is Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial?

Where the pink color comes from

Rosé Impérial is Moët & Chandon’s rosé and relies more heavily on Pinot Noir than the regular Brut Impérial. The blend contains 40 to 50 percent Pinot Noir, 30 to 40 percent Pinot Meunier and 10 to 20 percent Chardonnay. The distinctive feature is that first grape: around a tenth of the blend is added as red wine. That’s what gives it its bright pink color, along with a firmer structure and the red fruit you’ll find in the glass.

The Chardonnay share is noticeably lower here than in the Brut Impérial, which contains 20 to 30 percent Chardonnay. You can taste the difference: the rosé is fuller and fruitier, with less of that crisp citrus character. Still, this is a brut and therefore a dry Champagne, at the same 12.5% as every other bottle from the house in Épernay.

What does Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial taste like?

Wild strawberries, raspberries and a peppery kick

Nose

Red fruit and rose

Wild strawberries, raspberries and cherries come first, followed by notes of rose and a slight peppery kick that keeps the aroma intriguing.

Palate

Full-bodied

The intensity of red fruit lingers and is complemented by peach flesh. Fruity and full-bodied, but not sweet.

Finish

Menthol and freshness

The finish has a menthol-like freshness. That is exactly what makes it a good match for Mediterranean dishes and sushi.

Fresh 4/5
Fruity 4/5
Power 3/5

Tasting profile of Rosé Impérial served on its own, at 8 to 10 degrees. The red fruit comes through more strongly as the champagne warms slightly in the glass.

How to drink it

How to pour Rosé Impérial

Chill the bottle to 8 to 10 degrees and turn the bottle, not the cork, when opening. Pour down the side of a tilted glass and fill it about two-thirds full; a 75 cl bottle makes about five glasses.

On its own with food

Pour about 12 cl per glass and put the bottle back in the cooler. The red fruit and peppery kick hold their own with Mediterranean dishes and sushi, where a crisp brut sometimes falls short.

Glass: tulip or flute →

From a white wine glass

To really smell the rose and wild strawberries, pour 10 cl into a white wine glass instead of a narrow flute. More surface area means more aroma; you trade off some bubbles.

Wine glasses →

Kir Royale with rosé

Pour 15 ml crème de cassis into the bottom of the glass and top up with 110 ml Rosé Impérial. The red fruit in the champagne carries through into the cassis, so keep the amount small.

Which glass goes with Rosé Impérial?

A tulip-shaped glass brings out the red fruit and rose while still preserving the bubbles. A flute is the safe choice for toasting; a coupe is festive but lets the bubbles escape faster.

Everything about Moët & Chandon →
What is the alcohol percentage of Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial?
12.5%, like every other bottle from the house. This also applies to Brut Impérial, Nectar Impérial, Grand Vintage, and Ice Impérial.
What is the difference between Rosé Impérial and Brut Impérial?
The grape blend. Rosé contains 40 to 50 percent pinot noir, compared with 30 to 40 percent in Brut Impérial, while the chardonnay share drops from 20 to 30 percent to 10 to 20 percent. Around 10 percent is also added to the blend as red wine, giving it its color and red-fruit flavors.
Is Rosé Impérial sweet?
No. It is a brut and therefore a dry champagne. What people mistake for sweetness is the ripe red fruit: wild strawberry, raspberry, and cherry. If you are looking for a sweet bottle from the same house, Nectar Impérial is the demi-sec.
How cold should you serve rosé champagne?
At 8 to 10 degrees. Any colder and the red fruit fades into the background; any warmer and the mousse loses its tension. Put the bottle back in the cooler in between pours.
Which glass is best to use?
A tulip-shaped glass with a generous bowl. It gives the rose, strawberry, and peppery notes room to breathe while keeping the bubbles together. A flute is fine for a toast; a coupe looks festive but makes the bubbles dissipate faster.
