Onis Munique

A stemmed beer glass drinks differently from a straight glass: you hold it by the stem, so your hand doesn’t warm the beer. Munique by Onis has this shape, with a rounded bowl on a short stem and a rim that curves slightly inward to retain the foam.

The range consists of three glasses: 26 and 40 cl stemmed glasses, and a 49 cl straight glass. All three come in sets of six. The name refers to Munich, where this type of beer glass originates.

Which Munique size suits which beer?

The capacity printed on a beer glass is the total capacity, not the serving size. So in the 40 cl glass you pour about 33 cl of beer with two fingers of foam above it. That is the size for craft beer, tripel and weissbier. The 26 cl is meant for heavier beers you drink in smaller measures, such as a quadrupel or a barley wine. The straight 49 cl glass is the vase shape for wheat beer, which throws a lot of foam and therefore needs the extra height. You will find more shapes among the craft beer glasses.

How to pour a beer with a proper head

Hold the glass at an angle first and pour against the wall, then bring it upright once it is half full. That builds a firm head without the beer running over. A wet glass foams better than a dry one, so rinse it with cold water before you pour. For a kopstoot, stand the footed glass next to the jenever and drink from them alternately, letting the beer come up to drinking temperature at its own pace.

Grease, foam and cleaning

Grease is the enemy of foam: a single fingerprint on the inside will collapse the head within a minute. So wash beer glasses separately from greasy plates, or use a glass brush with cold water and no washing-up liquid. The glasses are dishwasher-safe, but rinse aid left behind has exactly the same effect as grease, so always rinse thoroughly and never dry with a used tea towel.

More to explore in the range

More ranges from this brand can be found at Onis. If you are looking for a bigger glass with a handle, you will find those among the beer steins, and for the standard 25 and 30 cl serving sizes look at the beer glasses. To keep the head intact, the glass brushes help. And if you want to move from beer to mixed drinks, all the recipes are gathered at the cocktails.
