The choice within this range is easy to survey. The 20 cl tumbler is the glass for water with a meal, for soft drinks or for a short drink on ice; it sits low and is not easily knocked over on a full table. You reach for the 28.5 cl long drink glass as soon as tonic, cola or sparkling water joins in, because then you need room for the ice and the mixer together. Among the tumbler glasses and the long drink glasses you will find the same straight shape in other capacities. At home, count on six glasses per size; behind the bar, on two sets per table.

You fill a straight glass differently from a bowl. Put it on the table, let the ice come up past the middle first and then pour along the wall, so the foam does not climb over the rim. The 28.5 cl long drink glass takes a gin and tonic with four or five ice cubes and still enough tonic, and you build a cuba libre straight in it with the lime at the bottom. The tumbler is meant for water, juice or a short drink, not for a topped-up long drink.

Stackable glass has one weak spot: stack them wet and they suck themselves together. Let them drain first with the opening facing down and only stack once they are dry. If two do get stuck, do not pull at them but put the bottom glass in lukewarm water and fill the top one with cold water. The glasses are dishwasher safe; a short programme and a good rinse prevent the dull haze that limescale leaves on smooth glass.
