Onis Facets

The series has three sizes and together they cover almost everything that passes across a bar. The 25.1 cl tumbler is the low, wide shape for whisky neat, a classic cocktail with one large block of ice, or simply water with a meal. The 35 cl long drink is the everyday size for soft drinks, beer and mixed drinks with plenty of ice.

The 47.3 cl long drink is the generous version. It calls for a lot of ice and a long pour, and is meant for drinks you don't want to top up halfway through. Choose this size if you mainly serve iced tea, cola with plenty of ice or large long drinks.

The 25.1 cl tumbler is the shape for an old fashioned, where the glass has to be wide enough for a large block of ice and a strip of orange peel. Two measures of spirit, a sugar cube and bitters: you need nothing more.

Fill the long drink sizes with ice from the bottom up before the drink goes in, because ice that fills the whole height melts more slowly than a couple of cubes on top. For a cuba libre the 35 cl works best, with rum, cola and a good wedge of lime squeezed into it.

Onis tempers the glass, which makes the rim and the base better able to take knocks than ordinary soda-lime glass. You notice that mainly in the wash-up area, where glasses come up against one another. If a tempered glass does break, it falls apart into blunt fragments instead of shards.

All three sizes can go in the dishwasher. Stand them upright and not jammed against each other, and rinse with soft water if you suffer from limescale, because the facets show a haze sooner than a smooth wall does.
