NUDE Glass Climats

Climats is the name Burgundy gives to its defined vineyard plots: parcels of land sometimes only a few hundred meters apart that nevertheless produce a different wine. NUDE Glass translated that idea into three glasses, each giving a different type of wine room to breathe.

The series is made from lead-free crystal glass, with a thin rim and a stem drawn from the same piece. You get 39, 50, and 64 cl, six of each. The difference is greater than it seems: the largest glass holds more than one and a half times the volume of the smallest.

Which bowl for which wine

The size determines how much surface the wine has to catch air. The 39 cl bowl is the narrowest and keeps fresh aromas together, which suits white wine and lighter reds. The 50 cl is the middle size that takes almost anything. The 64 cl is meant for full-bodied reds: pinot noir, nebbiolo, an older bordeaux.

In all three, pour up to the widest point of the bowl and no higher. In the 64 cl that is about a fifth of the capacity, which feels stingy. It is meant that way, because the empty space above captures the aroma. The rest of the brand can be found under the NUDE Glass glasses.

Pouring, swirling and serving

Hold the glass by the stem. Not out of etiquette, but because a warm hand warms a chilled wine within minutes, and with a wall this thin that happens fast. Swirl with the glass on the table: a short turn of the foot releases the aromas without spilling.

Serve white wine at around 10 degrees and red at around 16. A sangria is the one thing you should not pour into these bowls but into a large glass with ice, because fruit and ice cubes damage the thin rim. The shapes for each type of wine can be found under the red wine glasses and the white wine glasses.

Thin crystal glass and the dishwasher

Lead-free crystal glass is clearer and thinner than ordinary glass because it contains other oxides instead of lead. That makes it vulnerable in one place: the transition from stem to bowl. NUDE Glass draws that transition from a single piece, stronger than an attached stem, but care still pays off.

The series is dishwasher safe on a short glassware programme. Place the glasses apart, do not let them rest against cutlery and dry them afterwards with a lint-free cloth.

Looking for a wider bowl, or a smaller one? The full overview is under the wine glasses, sorted by shape and capacity. If you want a young red to open up faster than the glass alone allows, have a look at the decanters. And if you are after the recipe rather than the glass, the cocktail pages give the ratios and the matching glass for every classic.
