Duralex Chope

The choice between the three sizes follows whatever you pour into them. The 20 cl tumbler is the size for water at the table, juice at breakfast or a small glass of beer. At 28 cl you are into a half pint or a soft drink over ice, and 33 cl takes a whole can plus ice cubes without reaching the rim. Pay attention to the wall thickness too: on the chope it is heftier than on thin crystal, which makes the glass feel more substantial and less likely to tip over on a crowded table.

Pour beer down the side of the glass and straighten it for the last few centimetres, and the head stays manageable in a straight glass with no belly. For soft drinks and iced coffee, fill with ice first and only then with liquid, so the glass cools evenly. The chope also works as a simple cocktail glass: a Cuba Libre or a gin and tonic with plenty of ice fits the 33 cl exactly, without having to go easy on the tonic.

Tempered glass is cooled rapidly after forming, which puts the outer layer under compression. That makes the chope better able to withstand knocks and temperature swings than ordinary soda-lime glass. If such a glass does break, it falls apart into blunt granules instead of shards. The dishwasher is no problem, limescale is: do not put the glasses away upside down while they are still steaming, and only stack them once they are completely dry.
