The 49 cl is meant for drinks in which the mixer makes up the bulk. Fill it to the rim with ice and about 30 cl is left for liquid, enough for a measure of spirits and a whole bottle of tonic or ginger beer. The 37 cl is for shorter drinks where you want more flavour than volume, and for water with a meal. Note too that both shapes have the same base diameter, so they sit neatly side by side on a tray. Chill the glass by filling it with ice and water for a minute and tipping that out just before use. In hard water the irregular surface can show limescale streaks sooner; a rinse aid in the machine prevents that, and a cloth with a little vinegar along the wall removes existing deposits.
