Bormioli Rocco Spazio

There is a big difference between a wine glass that looks full and one that is actually full. If you pour into a small bowl, the wine reaches just below the rim, leaving no room to swirl. In a spacious bowl, the same amount forms a shallow layer at the bottom, with all the air above it where the aroma can collect.

Bormioli Rocco’s Spazio is built around this idea. The name means space, reflected in its open, tall shapes. The series is Italian machine-made glassware and is supplied as a set.

Which Spazio bowl suits your wine?

Together the three wine glasses cover the whole range. The 40 cl medium is the everyday size: big enough to swirl, small enough to keep going with all evening. The 63.7 and 64 cl models are the generous bowls, meant for full-bodied red wine that needs air to let its tannin settle.

When choosing, also look at how many come per set. The medium, the 64 cl model and the flute come in threes, the 63.7 cl glass in sixes. For a table of six you are therefore laying with either one set or two, and that decides whether everything matches. The 19 cl champagne flute is narrow and tall, which holds the carbonation longer.

How to pour from a roomy bowl

Fill a large bowl to about a third. That looks like little, but it is exactly the amount you can swirl without touching the rim, and swirling is what opens the wine up. With the medium you can pour slightly higher, to just below the widest point.

The roomy bowls also lend themselves well to an aperitif over ice. An Aperol spritz or a Hugo spritz needs the volume to hold ice cubes, prosecco and a sprig of mint. In that case pour the ice first, then the wine and only then the soda water.

Material and care

These glasses are made of machine-blown soda-lime glass with a drawn stem, which means bowl and stem come from one piece. That is the strongest construction there is, because there is no seam where the glass can snap.

They can simply go in the dishwasher. Stand the large bowls upright rather than tilted against each other, because a 64 cl bowl has a thin rim that is damaged by the slightest knock.

More from this Italian factory can be found under the glasses by Bormioli Rocco. If you want to compare by size rather than by range, the large bowls are under the red wine glasses and the smaller models under the white wine glasses.
