Arcoroc Islande

Start with what you pour most often. For water and soft drinks at the table the long drink glass of 22 or 29 cl works well: tall enough for ice, narrow enough to hold. If you want to be able to pour cola or beer without topping up straight away, 33 or 36 cl is the logical step. The low version with the heavy base is among the tumbler glasses and runs from 20 to 38 cl; that one belongs with whisky, juice and everything you serve over ice. The shot glasses of 6 and 6.5 cl come in twelves, the 10 cl Tubo in sixes. That Tubo is straight rather than waisted: easier to stack, less grip.

The 33 cl is the classic long drink format. Fill it two thirds with ice, pour the spirit over it and top up with the mixer, so the ice cools the drink rather than diluting it. For a Cuba Libre that is exactly the right ratio, and the narrow shape holds the fizz longer than a wide beaker. The 36 cl leaves room for mint and lime, which makes it suitable for a Mojito. Whisky and jenever go in the 20 cl tumbler, neat or over one large ice cube.

Islande is made of tempered glass. After forming, the glass is cooled rapidly, which puts the outer layer under tension and makes it more resistant to knocks and to rapid temperature changes than ordinary soda-lime glass. The whole range can go in the dishwasher without any concern. Do place the glasses apart from each other, because tempered glass that does break falls apart into small pieces, and that mostly happens when glasses knock against each other during the cycle.
