The Lehmann No. 2 is a crystal glass decanter with a capacity of 140 centiliters. That is more than enough for a magnum or two standard bottles at once. The decanter is intended for restaurants and wine bars where decanting is done at the table and the glassware should look just as impressive as the wine.
Working with a large decanter
With 140 cl, you can pour an entire magnum in one go without having to stop halfway. This saves time at the table and prevents you from stirring up the sediment after all. Crystal glass is thinner and clearer than ordinary glass, so you can see when the first cloudiness reaches the neck and stop pouring in time. Work above a light source or candle so you can see the sediment approaching well in advance. Smaller bottles are best decanted in one of the more compact decanters.
Maintaining crystal glass
Crystal glass absorbs odors more quickly than ordinary glass, so wash the decanter by hand only, using lukewarm water without dish soap. Rinse it immediately after service, because dried tannins adhere to the inner wall and eventually turn it brown. For the bottom, use a long decanter brush from the wine accessories range instead of rice or an abrasive, which can cause scratches. Then let the decanter dry completely on a wine stand before putting it away.
